The Challenge

Why Wave Soldering Still Matters

Despite the SMT revolution, 40–60% of components in power supplies, automotive BCMs, and industrial controllers still require through-hole insertion — and wave soldering remains the only viable mass-production method.

01

Manual Soldering Bottleneck

Hand-soldering DIP components costs $12–18/hr per operator and delivers inconsistent joint quality. A single cold solder joint in a power supply can cause field failure — costing 100× more to recall than to solder correctly.

02

Lead-Free Compliance Pressure

EU RoHS and China's dual-carbon policy demand lead-free soldering. SAC305 (Sn96.5/Ag3.0/Cu0.5) requires precise temperature profiling — a 10°C overshoot destroys component life, while 10°C undershoot creates brittle joints.

03

Japanese Equipment Cost Trap

Panasonic, Fuji, and Yamaha wave soldering lines cost 30–50% more in CapEx, with 8–12 week lead times and proprietary spare parts. For mid-volume DIP lines, the ROI math doesn't work.

Mechanical Principle

How Dual Wave Soldering Works

The PCB passes through 4 process zones in sequence: flux application → preheat → turbulent wave → laminar wave → cooling. Each zone is independently controlled for optimal thermal profiling.

FLUX PREHEAT (4 ZONES) DUAL WAVE SOLDER COOLING Japan ST-6 Nozzles 10–100 mL/min Z1 Z2 Z3 Z4 Hot Air + PID Control RT → 250°C · ±2°C TURBULENT Breaks oxide layer High wave 30mm LAMINAR Smooth finish Flat wave 5–12mm FAN Forced Air Cooling PCB Temperature Profile: RT → 100°C → 150°C → 200°C → 250°C → 265°C (solder) → Cool All 4 preheat zones independently PID-controlled for optimal thermal ramp rate
Dual Wave Technology

Turbulent + Laminar = Zero Defects

The two-wave system is the heart of modern wave soldering. The turbulent wave breaks through component-lead oxide layers for full wetting, while the laminar wave removes excess solder for clean, IPC-610-compliant joints.

Turbulent Wave (First Wave)

Oxide Breaker · High-Energy · 30mm Height

The first wave is a high-velocity turbulent jet that physically breaks through the oxide layer on component leads and PCB pads. This ensures complete wetting — even for components with heavy oxidation or difficult geometries.

TURBULENT WAVE High velocity · Breaks oxide · Full wetting
  • Velocity: high-energy jet spray
  • Height: up to 30mm
  • Function: oxide layer penetration
  • Result: complete solder wetting on all leads

Laminar Wave (Second Wave)

Smoother · Precision · 5–12mm Flat Wave

The second wave is a calm, smooth laminar flow that removes excess solder from the first wave. It eliminates bridges,/icicles, and solder balls — producing clean, consistent joints that pass IPC-610 Class 3 inspection.

LAMINAR WAVE Smooth flow · Removes excess · Zero bridges
  • Velocity: smooth laminar flow
  • Height: 5–12mm adjustable
  • Function: excess solder removal
  • Result: bridge-free, IPC-610 Class 3 joints
Temperature Profiling

4-Zone Independent PID Control

Each preheat zone is independently controlled via PID + SSR, enabling precise thermal ramp rates. The chart below shows a typical SAC305 lead-free profile for a power supply PCB.
